Panthers v Houghton 16 02 25

This Sunday, the Panthers hosted Houghton at Preston Avenue. With our league match postponed, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Houghton for stepping in to ensure we had a game to play. It was a competitive yet friendly match, and it’s always a pleasure to face such a spirited team. Thank you once again, and best of luck with the remainder of your league matches.

Despite facing a smaller squad than usual due to the relentless flu affecting both players and coaches, the team adapted well to new positions. Captain S. Gicquel stepped up as a winger for parts of the match and made an immediate impact by running the length of the pitch to score the first try, which was converted by C. Ward, bringing the halftime score to 7-0 in favour of the Panthers.

The second half saw both teams eager to continue the contest. Houghton put up a strong defence against the Panthers until L. Calvert broke through to score a spectacular try, extending the lead to 12-0. The Panthers quickly followed with another try, raising the score to 17-0.

Captain S. Gicquel showcased her skills with an interception, running the full length of the pitch to score another try, which was converted by C. Ward, bringing the score to 24-0. However, Houghton was not ready to concede and fought back with two converted tries, putting pressure back on the Panthers.

The final try of the match came from Panther E. Barker, leading to a winning score of 31-14 in favour of Percy Park.

Special recognition goes to J. Clayton, awarded Back of the Match; J. Wood, named Forward of the Match; and P. Wood, honoured as Opposition Player of the Match.

Looking ahead, we will celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, 2025, when we welcome Rockcliff Roses to Preston Avenue for what promises to be a memorable day for women in rugby.
