    A brief history of Percy Park RFC


    Percy Park RFC Founded

    Percy Park RFC founded by J Stanley Todd, 1st XV Captain. The club originally played on a field behind his home at No 60 Percy Park Tynemouth.

    World Events - The Mary Celeste sets sails from New York on November 5th and is found 1 month later crewless.


    The Club Moves To Preston Avenue

    Club moves to Preston Avene and also goes on first tour to Bristol and Cardiff

    World Events - The first modern Olympic Games in Athens.Klondike gold rush begins.


    The All Blacks Come To Park

    Northumberland plays New Zealand All Blacks at Percy Park to a 10,000 crowd and lose 31 - 0.

    World Events - Einstein publishes his Special Theory of Relativity. Chelsea FC are founded. The first U-Boat is launched.


    Park Wins Senior Cup and Shield

    After a period in the doldrums 1st XV win Northumberland Senior Cup & 2nd XV win the Senior Shield.

    World Events - Laszlo Biro patents the ball point pen in Britain. Nylon first manufactured by Du Pont.


    The Ground Is Purchased

    The purchase of the ground for £3000 is complete and a memorial tablet is unveiled in honour of those members who had not returned from World War II.

    World Events - North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formed (NATO). George Orwell's 1984 published. Rationing of clothes ends in Britain.


    Ranald Capped

    International honours for Ranald Macdonald who received his first cap for Scotland aginst France at Murrayfield with Scotland winning 8 - 5. Ranald also toured Australia as part of the British Lions.

    World Events - The Peak District becomes Britain's first National Park.


    New Clubhouse Completed

    The new clubhouse is complete and opened by the Duke of Northumberland. Negotiations begin to lease a 2nd pitch on Harbottles field.

    World Events - France, West Germany & Italy establish the European Union. James Dean dies in car crash.


    Caps For Donald and Derek

    International honours for Donald Rutherford and Derek Morgan who received their first caps for England against Wales in the Five Nations with England winning 14 - 6.

    World Events - US scientists develop laser device. First weather satellite launched.


    A Century of Rugby

    The centenary is marked with a game against Leicester with Park losing 18-32. Mini rugby starts at Percy Park after first introduced as “New Image” Rugby by RFU in 1970

    World Events - Eleven Israeli athletes murdered by terrorists at the Munich Olympics. The first scientific hand-held calculator (HP-35) is introduced (price $395).


    The New Stand Is Completed

    The new concrete and steel stand is completed replacing the old wooden stand that burnt down.

    World Events - First flight of US Space Shuttle. Compact discs first launched.


    Percy Park Youth Trust Formed

    The trust was the brainchild of ex-president Tony Baker and life member Jack Pyle who along with several senior club members had the foresight to establish the trust in 1986 to build up funds for the furtherance of junior rugby.

    World Events - Chernobyl disaster, 133,000 people evacuated. Fall out affects all Europe.


    And Finished

    The new and current Clubhouse is completed. A new junior pitch is brought into play and or the first time in the club history Percy Park field mini and junior sides from U8 through to U18.

    World Events - 258 people killed when 2 American Embassies are bombed allegedly ordered by Osama Bin Laden.


    Senior Cup Finalists

    Park play at Northern in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final after a 46 year wait but lose to Tynedale 64 - 8.

    World Events - Saddam Hussein executed. First case of bird flu in UK.


    Tears and Joy

    The 1st XV narrowly miss out on a Twickenham EDF final after losing away to Tyldesley 22 - 17 but gain promotion to North 1 East after beating Bridlington 36 -3 in a play off.

    >World Events - Pop superstar Michael Jackson found dead 25th June.


    Lions XV and Maruaders Cup Wins

    The Lions win the No 2 County Cup while the Marauders win not only the No 5 County Cup but also Northumberland County League 3C.

    World Events - Ash from volcanic eruptions in Iceland disrupts air traffic across northern and western Europe.


    50 Year Wait Ends

    The 1st XV finish runners up in the league losing out in promotion to Burnage in the last play of the game, but win the Northumberland Senior Cup for the first time in 50 years. The Lions retain the County Cup and also win the Candy League Division 2. The Marauders also win the league this year.

    World Events - London riots in August this year spread to Bristol, Birmingham and Liverpool. Osama Bin Laden architect of 9/11 killed by US special forces in Pakistan.


    Promoted and Senior Cup Retained

    The 1st XV again finished in the runners up spot but this time went on to gain promotion by defeating Liverpool St Helens in the play-off to be promoted to National League 3 North (Level5). The 1st XV also retained the County Cup. The Percy Park Penguins (Veterans) win the Northumberland No5 Cup.

    World Events - Diamond Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II and the London Olympics sees GB 3rd in the medal table


    Northumberland Cup Winners for 3rd Successive Year

    Senior Cup winners for the 3rd successive year, the 1st XV finish a credible 5th in their first season of promotion, but sadly were relegated back into North 1 East after the following season. The Pumas won the Northumberland 3rd XV Cup

    World Events - Nelson Mandela dies age 95. Horsemeat scandal sees beef product removed from many leading supermarket shelves.
