Welcome to Percy Park RFC

On Ilkley Moor bar points

Alex Tilley scores for ParkAlex Tilley scores for ParkPercy Park travelled to Stacks Field, one of the most picturesque settings for a rugby club in the North of England. The two sides last played each other in the 2009/10 season when Park won both encounters and the visitors had high hopes on the back of last week’s bonus point win at the expense of Rochdale.

Ilkley opened the scoring after only 4 minutes when a missed tackle allowed right wing Ben Magee to cross the line and fly half Josh Kimber converted.

When Percy Park were awarded an eighth minute penalty Ash Smith kicked the points. Park then went into the lead with a fine Alex Tilley try after the visitors turned over the ball and broke blind with Ali Blair cutting through the defence to set away Park’s right wing, who still had work to do to beat the defence before going over for the score. Ash Smith converted and Park led  10 – 7.

Both fly halves then missed penalty chances before Josh Kimber levelled the scores.

Bonus point win to start the season

Michael Langlands scores Park's 1st tryMichael Langlands scores Park's 1st tryPercy Park started their North 1 East league campaign of 2014/15 with a bonus point win, centred round a superb 6 minute spell just before half time which saw the home side run in 3 tries.

Last season Rochdale had finished 5th in this league, and could have been promotion candidates had they not suffered an 8 points league deduction from the RFU. Both sides had players missing due to injury or unavailability, but it was the visiting team that scored first with a penalty from the boot of James Duffy after Park were offside in midfield.

Percy Park dominated the set scrummages denying the Lancashire side good first phase possession. A Rochdale line-out in the Park half saw the ball overthrown at the back and the home side capitalised with man of the match Andy Dunn picking up the loose ball and finding Ali Blair who surged through the defence. The Park centre was stopped in the visitors 22 before off-loading to Ben Bell who passed to skipper Michael Langlands to score in the right hand corner on 24 minutes for a 5 – 3 lead.

Park cut loose at Carlisle

John Scott back and impressiveJohn Scott back and impressivePark travelled to Warwick Road to take on Carlisle in their second pre-season friendly in the run up to the league campaign which starts on 6th September 2014. A bare squad travelled across the A69 with a Lions squad also playing against Medicals at Preston Avenue.

The home side made the better start with territorial advantage as Park soaked up the pressure finding difficulty breaking out of their own half until somewhat against the run of play Ali Blair scored a good individual try chasing down a kick out of defence. The ball would not sit up for the Park centre to pick up and race to the Carlisle line, but 3 fly hacks did the job as he beat the defence to the touch down and Ash Smith converted to give the visitors a 7 – 0 lead after 11 minutes.

Although the home side had the edge in the early scrummages, Park’s pack settled down and the Cumbrian side had no real threat out wide.

Park through to Senior Cup semi

Harry ThorpeHarry Thorpe
Percy Park and Morpeth opened up the Northumberland Senior Cup for the 2014/15 season with a cracker of a game which thoroughly entertained both partisan supporter and neutral alike. With this being the only mid-week game, the others being played on Saturday 30th August, there were a number of spectators from other Northumberland clubs who were entertained to some fast flowing rugby.

Park showed their intentions early on by running everything, but came unstuck when ball was spilled inside their 22, which was snaffled by Morpeth and wing Deven Rees raced to the line to score the opening try under the posts, an easy conversion for Karl Birch inside 2 minutes.

Park struck back 4 minutes later after an Ali Blair break found full back Toby Davidson in support for the try. Ash Smith hit the post in the conversion attempt so Morpeth were still ahead 7 – 5.

The home side looked dangerous in open play and several penalties were taken quickly to keep up the momentum in the game, but it was Morpeth who increased their lead with a Birch penalty.

On 19 minutes Park threatened on the left wing when Harry Thorpe was stopped short of the try line, the ball was quickly re-cycled right with Ali Blair denied a try by some stern defence, but the offload found Andy Dunn in support to go over for the score which Ash Smith converted to put the black and white in front 12 -10.
