Percy Park travelled to Ponteland for this final game of the 2007/2008 season with the home side already destined for rugby in Durham and Northumberland 2 in September, and the visitors unable to improve on their third place slot. Both sides had pride to play for however, and this was abundantly clear when Pont opened the scoring with only minutes on the clock.
Judging by the cold climate, it could have been December, although Pont couldn't have hoped for such a festive start when Liam Casey gift wrapped an interception pass to the nimble Ponteland left wing who scampered half the length of the pitch to score between the posts. With the conversion, the home side led 7 - 0.
Ponteland scored again soon after when ex Park player Geaeme Turnbull deftly chipped a sleepy defence for the next score and a shell shocked Percy Park side trailed 14 - 0.
The visitors had much of the early possession which they couldn't convert into points, until a fine catch and drive from a line out in the Pont 22, resulted in a try for Carl Griffiths. Park missed hooker Andy Dunn who had been out for several weeks with a broken hand, with prop Chris Reekie throwing in to the line out, Then when he had to leave the field through injury, wing Thomas Turnbull took over the line out duties
.Park narrowed the gap further when Thomas Turnbull on the right wing for Park went over in the corner and Rutter kicked the conversion. The visitors then took the lead with another caught and driven line out and again Carl Griffiths claimed the important touch down, which Rutter converted.
The final points of the half came when Rutter kicked a penalty and Park went into the break up 22 - 14.The second half was a dour affair with Park having much of the possession but forcing the last pass when often it would have been better to go through another phase and keep the ball. Both sides were guilty of lots of knock ons and scrappy play, but Pont stuck to their task and managed to slow the game and deny the Park backs any quick ball.
Ponteland's man of the match was undoubtedly fly half Graeme Turnbull, who scored his side's next try when awarded a penalty near the Park try line. With quick thinking he took a quick tap, threw a dummy and squeezed over the line then kicked the conversion. The home side trailed by a single point, but the game was already well into injury time, and the score line remained 21 - 22.
