ANNUAL AWARDS

The Percy Park Players Dinner took place last Friday evening, in a change of format which obviously worked judging by the numbers attending up significantly on previous years. Gone was the sit down meal, then speeches and awards, this time players attended early for team photographs, followed by the presentation of awards and a "Hog Roast".

Driffield Away

The league fixtures for the new season have been published, and Park travel to Kellythorpe to play Driffield on 5th September 2009 in the newly titled North 1 East. The full list will be produced on the web site next week, which will also show the pre season friendlies and training games which have been arranged against Northern (14/8/2009), Sedgeley Park (22/8/2009) and Tynedale II (29/8/2009).

ASHINGTON 17 – 20 PERCY PARK

With the runners up spot already in the bag, along with a home tie for the play off game against Bridlington next week, Park elected to rest some of the regular 1st XV players, following the punishing fixture back log. That’s not to take anything away from Ashington, who battled away, and could have won this game following a strong second half showing.

The visitors started well and Liam Blackburn was on the score sheet again after only two minutes, when a chip through by fly half Ash Smith was retrieved by the winger, who, with a little juggling, managed to hold onto the ball and go over the line for a try which was unconverted.

With six minutes gone Ash Smith scored under the posts with a fine individual effort side stepping and breaking through several tackles before going over to give Marcus Rutter the easy conversion, and Park led by 12 points to nil.

Both fly halves had penalty chances which missed, but when Michael Langlands was harshly punished for handling in a ruck when on his feet over an Ashington player who hadn’t released the ball, it seemed as though James Philips would cut the deficit for the home side. Justice prevailed and the kick went wide.

 

With only a minute of playing time left in the first half Sam Walton powered over the try line to score after a driving maul from a line out on the Ashington 5 metre line. Marcus Rutter was off target, but the visitors had a comfortable lead going into the break.

Park will return to North 2 East next season after this comprehensive win against the runners up of Yorkshire 1. This was the second visit of the season to Preston Avenue for the East Yorkshire side, having lost to Park in EDF Energy Senior Vase 24 – 6, and they were hoping to avenge their exit from the cup, but Park were too strong in all departments.


Percy Park were able to field an almost full strength side and welcomed the return of club captain Brett Sylph who had been out for five weeks with broken ribs. Bridlington on the other hand were without influential kiwi fly half Jamie Muru, and were also missing their South African trio who had returned to Natal a few weeks earlier.

 

The first score came after 4 minutes when Marcus Rutter kicked a penalty after the referee had awarded the home side a penalty for Bridlington deliberately wheeling the scrum, much to the annoyance of the visiting supporters. Martin Robinson however levelled the scores on 10 minutes when Park were offside 25 yards from their own try line.

The blanket of fog which threaten to postpone this rearranged league game didn’t deter supporters from both clubs descending on the Benfield Road Sports Ground to watch this local derby. Park got off to a flying start and went close to scoring three times in as many minutes, but it took the trusty boot of Marcus Rutter to opening the scoring on five minutes.
